Nutrition for diabetes: what can and cannot be eaten? Diabetic menu for the week
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a complex metabolic disorder based on low tissue sensitivity to insulin. Normally, this pancreatic hormone lowers blood sugar levels.
Insulin promotes the diffusion of glucose into cells. Tissues absorb sugar molecules and use it as energy. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is primarily a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism. But at the same time, other types of metabolism suffer - lipid, protein, mineral.
Proper nutrition for type 2 diabetes is the basis of therapy. If the patient does not adhere to the diet, then no modern drugs can ensure the success of treatment.
What is the glycemic index
The glycemic index (GI) is the ability of foods to cause an increase in the patient's blood sugar level after entering the body. This value is used when creating a menu for diabetics with an insulin-dependent course of the disease. All products have their own GI. The higher this indicator, the faster blood sugar rises after eating a dish.
The glycemic index is classified into high (above 70 units), medium (40 to 70 units) and low (up to 40 units). The diet of a person suffering from diabetes should completely exclude foods with a high GI; foods with average values are consumed in limited quantities. The main part of the patient's diet consists of foods with a low glycemic index.
Tables of products broken down into such groups can be found on information portals or medical websites. With their help, you can create your own menu for a diabetic.
Basic nutrition rules
For people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, therapeutic dietary table No. 9 is provided. The purpose of special nutrition is to restore impaired carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the body.
The diet should be balanced and complete, varied and not boring.
- Breaks between meals should not be more than 3 hours.
- Meals become more frequent (6 times a day), and portions become smaller.
- The last meal is 2 hours before going to bed.
- Don't ignore breakfast: it starts your metabolism for the whole day, and with diabetes this is very important. Breakfast should be light but filling.
- Fruits, berries or vegetable mixes should be used as snacks.
- You will have to reduce your caloric intake, especially if you are overweight.
- When creating a menu, choose low-fat, boiled or steamed foods. Meat must be trimmed of fat before cooking; skin must be removed from chicken. All foods consumed must be fresh.
- The diet should contain a sufficient amount of fiber: it facilitates the absorption of carbohydrates, reduces the absorption of glucose in the gastrointestinal tract, stabilizes the level of glucose in the bloodstream, cleanses the intestines of toxic substances, and relieves swelling.
- You should limit your salt intake, and also stop smoking and drinking alcohol.
- Simple carbohydrates are replaced by complex ones, for example, cereals: oatmeal, buckwheat, corn, etc.
- When choosing bread, it is better to focus on dark varieties of baked goods, perhaps with the addition of bran.
- Of course, sugar, jams, cakes and pastries are removed from the menu. Sugar should be replaced with analogues: xylitol, aspartame, sorbitol.
First of all, people with type 2 diabetes will need to give up carbohydrates, but this is not entirely true: an absolute refusal of carbohydrate-containing foods will not only not help, but will also worsen the patient’s condition. For this reason, fast carbohydrates (sugar, confectionery) are replaced with fruits and cereals.
