PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

A remedy used for diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx. The effect of the drug is due to three active ingredients.

Antibacterial and antifungal activity

Hexetidine (INN - hexetidinum) exhibits antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative strains of microorganisms - both aerobes and anaerobes. It should be noted that it acts mainly bacteriostatically on strains of aerobic microorganisms; the bactericidal effect is weak. Hexetidine has a pronounced bactericidal effect on strains of anaerobic microorganisms. The mechanism of action is based on the competitive replacement of thiamine (the structure of hexetidine is similar to the structure of thiamine), which is necessary for the growth of microorganisms.

Anti-inflammatory activity

Choline salicylate is used due to its analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Analgesic activity

Chlorobutanol is used in otolaryngological (nasal drops, rinses) and dental practice (applications and irrigations) mainly as an anesthetic. Classically used as an anesthetic.

The active substances are fixed on the oral mucosa, from where they are gradually released.

    Pharmacological properties

    Pharmacodynamics.

The effect of the drug is due to three active components.

    Antibacterial and antifungal activity.

Hexetidine has an antibacterial effect on both gram-positive and gram-negative strains of microorganisms, both aerobic and anaerobic.

It should be noted that it has a generally bacteriostatic effect on aerobic strains, but the bactericidal effect is weak. Hexetidine has a pronounced bactericidal effect on anaerobic strains. The mechanism of action is a competitive action with thiamine: the structure of hexetidine is similar to the structure of thiamine, which is necessary for the growth of microorganisms.

    Anti-inflammatory activity.

Choline salicylate has analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. Use for the treatment of diseases of the oral cavity.

    Analgesic activity.

Chlorobutanol has an analgesic effect. Can be used, in particular, in otolaryngology (nasal drops, rinses) and in dental practice (applications and irrigation). Classically it can be used as an anesthetic.

The active substances are fixed on the oral mucosa, from where they are gradually released.

    Indications

Antibacterial and analgesic for local treatment of diseases of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and oropharynx.

    Contraindications

    • Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug
    • atrophic pharyngitis;

  • bronchial asthma or any other respiratory diseases associated with existing respiratory hypersensitivity.
  • Interaction with other drugs and other types of interactions

Do not use together with medications containing antiseptics.

Hexetidine can be inactivated by alkaline solutions.

    Application Features

When using the drug, do not swallow and avoid contact with eyes, since the drug contains ethanol.

The drug should be used with caution in patients with epilepsy. The drug may reduce the epileptic threshold and cause seizures in children.

Use with caution in patients prone to allergic reactions, including bronchial asthma, especially in patients allergic to acetylsalicylic acid.

If signs of hypersensitivity to the drug appear, its use should be stopped immediately.

Since the drug contains ethanol, it should therefore be administered with caution to patients with liver disease.

Long-term use is not recommended as it may alter the natural microbial balance of the mouth and throat, where there is a risk of bacterial and fungal spread.

If general clinical signs of a bacterial infection appear, general antibacterial therapy should be prescribed.

If symptoms persist for more than 5 days and/or body temperature is elevated, treatment strategies should be reconsidered.

If inflammation worsens, treatment should be discontinued.

    Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding

There are no data from human studies on the possibility of hexetidine crossing the placenta and excretion into breast milk, therefore the drug should not be used during pregnancy and lactation.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving vehicles or other mechanisms

The drug contains ethanol. Drivers are not recommended to drive for 30 minutes after using the drug.

    Directions for use and doses

    Children

    Overdose

There have been no reports of drug overdose.

If a sufficient amount of solution is absorbed into the oral cavity, alcohol intoxication may occur due to the ethyl alcohol content.

The concentration of hexetidine in the drug is not toxic if the drug is used as directed.

The occurrence of acute alcohol intoxication is unlikely. If a child swallows a large dose of the drug, alcohol intoxication may occur due to the ethyl alcohol content.

There have been no cases of excessive use of hexetidine, which led to allergic reactions.

Treatment of overdose is symptomatic but rarely necessary. If a child swallows the contents of the bottle, consult a doctor immediately. It is necessary to consider the possibility of performing gastric lavage within 2:00 after swallowing and take measures to eliminate signs of alcohol intoxication.

Long-term use is not recommended as the natural microbial balance of the mouth and throat may be altered and there is a risk of bacterial and fungal spread.

If general clinical signs of a bacterial infection occur, general antibacterial therapy should be provided.

If symptoms persist for more than 5 days and/or elevated body temperature, it is necessary to reconsider treatment tactics.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding. During pregnancy and lactation, the drug is used only as prescribed by a doctor and only when the benefit of its use for the mother outweighs the risk to the fetus.

The ability to influence reaction speed when driving vehicles and working with other mechanisms. Unknown.

    Interaction with other drugs

Doctors do not recommend using Givalex together with similar topical antiseptic drugs. This may lead to increased irritation of the oral mucosa.

If the disease is complex, Givalex can be combined with antibacterial drugs in the form of tablets and injections. Due to the low percentage of absorption of the substance and the low concentration of its components in the blood plasma, this medicine combines well with other drugs.

Cases of allergic reactions are very rare. This should serve as a reason to cancel this drug.
