Nutritionists often hear the question, “What is the best diet for cancer?” There is scientific evidence that certain foods and herbs have medicinal properties that can fight and prevent cancer.
One such protocol that may protect against cancer is called the Budwig protocol or the Budwig diet. Together with therapy (for example, Gerson therapy), the Budwig diet can effectively reduce the risk of developing cancer and speed up the recovery process after treatment.
General rules
There is no longer any doubt that dietary nutrition for cancer provides not only adequate nutritional support to the patient’s body, but is also one of the methods of complex treatment.
Quite a lot of anti-cancer diets have been developed, including original anti-cancer diets, one of which is the anti-cancer diet of Joanna Budwig, later called the “Badwig Protocol”. Her research interests were studying the effects of consumption of various types of fats on human health. As a result of scientific research, the author found that cancer patients in the later stages of the disease experience oxygen starvation of tissues and a deficiency of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the body. Based on the scientific results obtained, she proposed treating cancer with a diet, the basic principles of which are:
- Complete exclusion of saturated fatty acids from the diet and their replacement in favor of PUFAs.
- Eating whole, plant-based foods that are high in fiber, mostly raw or minimally processed.
The basic product in the diet is pressed flaxseed oil, obtained by cold pressing and mixed with low-fat cottage cheese (“Budwig Muesli”). In this case, proper preparation of the mixture is of great importance. Technology for preparing food mixture:
- Blend 3 tablespoons (42 g) flaxseed oil with 5-6 tablespoons (100 g) low-fat/1-2% fat cottage cheese in a blender/mixer on low speed for one minute until completely smooth. For better solubility, you can add 2-3 tablespoons of milk to the mixture.
- Add 2 tablespoons of freshly ground flax seeds to the mixture.
- To improve the taste, you can add 1 teaspoon of: honey, nuts, garlic, lemon, parsley, pumpkin seeds, hemp, sunflower or spices - cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon.
- Budwig muesli must be eaten immediately after preparation; it cannot be made in advance/stored for more than 20 minutes.
Budwig attaches great importance to a breakfast based on such a mixture, and according to the author, a properly prepared mixture allows for complete absorption of all its components and saturates the tissues with oxygen. At the same time, the diet involves the complete exclusion of foods containing saturated fats (fatty meats, fried foods, full-fat dairy products) and especially refined/otherwise processed fats (trans fats). Red meat and meat products made from it should be completely prohibited, since Dr. Budwig believed that red meat promotes/intensifies inflammatory processes in the body.
Any products prepared by canning and containing food additives (flavor enhancers, dyes, preservatives) are also excluded. The author recommends eliminating sugar, artificial sweeteners and foods containing it in large quantities from the diet: confectionery, ready-made sauces, ice cream, baked goods, factory-made juices, carbonated drinks, spicy foods, breakfast cereals. You should avoid butter and all dairy products, with the exception of low-fat cottage cheese for Budwig muesli, since dairy products contain fats that contribute to the accumulation of toxins and the growth of fungal flora.
White bread, refined cereals, and pasta are excluded from the diet, since they do not contain nutrients/dietary fiber necessary for normal digestion and increase glucose levels, which also contribute to the growth of fungal flora.
Consumption of seafood is not recommended, since, according to Budwig, they accumulate toxic substances, in particular heavy metals from sea water. Patients with cancer are not recommended to drink coffee, as it negatively affects the kidneys and nervous system. It is recommended to drink loose herbal teas rather than tea bags, as paper contains chlorine.
Dr. Budwig recommends avoiding aluminum utensils and cooking food in microwave ovens and Teflon-coated pans. It is better to use ceramic dishes or dishes made of glass, stainless steel or earthenware for these purposes.
It is recommended to consume seasonal vegetables/fruits as much as possible, with preference given to organic raw/steamed products. Freshly squeezed juices, especially those with pulp, are also useful.
It is important to include seeds, nuts, and dried fruits in their natural form in your diet. The author pays special attention to fermented foods, in particular, sauerkraut (its juice), which should be constantly present in the diet. To sweeten drinks, it is allowed to use only natural sweeteners - stevia, xylitol.
Of the meat products in the diet, only dietary types of poultry meat can be present - chicken, turkey, however, if possible, it is recommended to replace meat with wild-caught fish (perch, carp, cod, hake, flounder, halibut, herring, pike, mackerel, sardines, mullet, bream, trout), and not grown in fish farms.
The diet may contain only vegetable oils (olive, hemp, sunflower, sesame oil, grape seed oil), obtained by cold pressing, containing all the substances necessary for the functioning of cell membranes and cell respiration. Oils should not be exposed to heat, but should be consumed exclusively raw and added to prepared foods. Organic whole grain products (buckwheat, whole grain basmati rice, millet), as well as organic legumes (chickpeas, lentils, beans, peas) are extremely healthy. It is recommended to consume wheat in the form of sprouted grains.
As Budwig believed, a diet for cancer should be supplemented with solar therapy (30 minutes of daily exposure to direct sunlight), feasible physical activity and the creation of a positive emotional state.
Anti-cancer diet (Budwig protocol)
The Budwig Protocol has been heavily attacked by the food and pharmaceutical industries because it reflects research and provides evidence of the harmful effects of consuming “bad” fats such as refined oils, mayonnaise and margarine.
Dr. Budwig, who experimentally proved that eating refined foods contributes to the development of dangerous diseases, developed a special anti-cancer diet, which was later called the “Budwig Protocol.” The basis of this diet included flaxseed oil and low-fat cottage cheese.
The Budwig Protocol is now recognized throughout the world not only as the most successful anti-cancer diet, but also its therapeutic effect has been proven in the prevention and treatment of a large number of diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, asthma, arthritis, diabetes mellitus, peptic ulcer, liver dysfunction, atherosclerosis, cerebral stroke, myocardial infarction, etc.

Joanna Budwig's diet should include:
- Wholemeal bread/grain bread, crispbread, millet porridge, unpolished brown rice, buckwheat kernels.
- Cold pressed oil (linseed, olive, sunflower, grape seed, hemp).
- Poultry (chicken/turkey), rabbit meat.
- Low-fat fish (perch, carp, cod, hake, flounder, halibut, herring, pike, mackerel, sardines, mullet, bream, trout).
- Vegetables in the form of salads of broccoli, carrots, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers, cauliflower, beets, beets, asparagus, eggplant, kohlrabi, garden greens, seasoned with vegetable oil, as well as freshly prepared juices from them.
- Nuts of various types, seeds (flax, sesame) and seeds (pumpkin sunflower), wheat germ, kelp, dried fruits, bee products, seaweed.
- Ripe fruits/berries (apples, pears, apricots, grapes, mangoes, tangerines, strawberries, raspberries, peaches, melons, bananas) and their juices.
- Drinks include green/herbal tea, still mineral water.

Additional advice from Dr. Budwig for fighting cancer
- Flaxseed oil should always be cold pressed, and preferably organic. Store it in the refrigerator.
- Avoid fish oil and fried fish.
- Green tea with honey and lemon juice is beneficial for cancer. A pinch of cayenne pepper may also help.
- Eat foods rich in chlorophyll. Make healing green smoothies regularly.
- Follow an alkaline diet.
- Avoid sunscreens, cosmetics and toxic lotions.
- Make lemon and pineapple drinks once a day, which can quickly improve your body's pH.
- Do not eat white bread, white rice, white sugar, white flour, etc.
- Avoid table salt and start using high-quality sea salt from a health food store.
- Find a safe alternative to bleaches and detergents.
- Thanks to the Budwig Protocol, thrush should be eliminated, which is very important for the fight against cancer.
- Avoid all vaccines.
- Use transdermal iodine, but be careful with povidone iodine. If you must take iodine tablets, take a red seaweed supplement. Do not use other iodine supplements.
- Take 1 tsp daily. Cold pressed, organic coconut oil.
- Use vitamin B17 in severe cases, but avoid it for people with liver problems.

In Joanna Budwig's diet you should limit:
- Red meat and all meat products made from it (sausages, smoked meats), especially fried.
- All foods containing saturated fat.
- Canned products, pickles, marinades, semi-finished meat products, fast food, products containing food additives (dyes, flavor enhancers, preservatives).
- Seafood (shrimp, crab, oysters).
- Hard-boiled chicken eggs, fresh white bread, pasta, baked goods.
- Sugar, artificial sweeteners and products containing it in large quantities: confectionery, jam, ice cream, baked goods, creams, factory juices, sweet carbonated drinks, cakes, candies, pastries, breakfast cereals.
- Carbonated drinks with preservatives and coffee made from beans are excluded from drinks.

Precautionary measures
You should not follow the Budwig Diet protocol if you have internal bleeding, colorectal cancer, or have had bowel surgery, as mentioned above.
In any case, before starting a diet, consult your doctor.
Do not start the Budwig Diet if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as nutritional deficiencies may occur.
* A1 casein . There are two types of protein in milk. Over the past 1,000 years, some dairy cows have developed a genetic mutation that produces an irregular type of protein, A1 beta-casein. Healthier than fish oil
There are articles on the Internet that say that all natural vegetable oils are effective against cancer, but the author of this method used only flaxseed oil. Budwig has proven that this oil is twice as rich in valuable substances as fish oil! In addition, it has an optimal combination of omega-3 and omega-6 .
She repeated that it is impossible to make distortions in the use of one type of fatty acids. If you consume a lot of meat, your joints may hurt because it contains an excess of arachidonic acid (an omega-6), and such a diet provokes arthritis. Its excess in the body is one of the factors of inflammation. Balancing fatty acids will help keep your skeletal system healthy. And this is where flax seeds, which contain omega-3, will provide an invaluable service. Taking them regularly will help you avoid cancer.
However, the seeds sold in Russia vary greatly in their benefits. The explanation is simple: there are two subspecies of common flax: curly and long. And if the first one is bred to produce oil, then the long one is produced to produce fabrics. The amount of nutrients in its seeds is minimal.
Flax seeds of the "VNIIMK 620" , which is grown, have an optimal ratio of omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 (7:1:3). But in technical varieties, low-value omega-9 acid predominates. Therefore, choose your product carefully, remember that curly flax is the most valued. Its seeds can be identified by their appearance - they are smaller than those of the long tree.

Unfortunately, from the standpoint of evidence-based medicine, the Budwig diet, proposed by the author in the middle of the last century, does not have scientifically based evidence of its effectiveness in the treatment of cancer patients and their recovery on the background of the diet proposed by Budwig. Moreover, we are talking about stage 3-4 cancer, in which 46-88% of cancer patients develop malnutrition, and in its extreme form ( anorexia-cachexia syndrome ) even causes death.
Rather, according to most nutritionists, we can talk about its general health-improving effect, as well as the possibility of using it for conditions/diseases such as atherosclerosis , coronary artery disease, hypertension , eczema , arthritis , and autoimmune diseases.
Moreover, it is necessary to understand that diet therapy alone, no matter what your diet, is not enough to defeat cancer. Balanced nutrition, taking into account the stage of the disease, treatment methods and the patient’s condition, should be perceived only as a complement to the main methods of treatment (hormonal therapy, surgical interventions, chemotherapy / radiation therapy ), but at the same time, we must not forget that ignoring the fundamental principles of nutrition reduces The body's resistance and the effectiveness of basic therapy slow down the recovery process.
Why does a person get sick?
The first reason is fungi and viruses. The environment where virus-infected cells reside is ideal for fungal activity. When the third or fourth stages of development of tumors and degenerative diseases occur, fungi and viruses are always found in the cells.
The second reason is toxins. Toxins come into contact with a person throughout his life. Look at a smoker - a cigarette contains more than 3,200 toxins! Metal dental fillings, which necessarily contain mercury, cause no less harm to the body. Small particles of mercury constantly penetrate into tissues with all the ensuing consequences.
All patients suffering from cancer or other degenerative diseases have high levels of isopropyl alcohol in their bodies, an industrial alcohol that is used in the production of many skin care products and household chemicals. Side effects and risks
The Budwig Diet is primarily about promoting healthy eating, but it has limited side effects and is not suitable for everyone.
People should keep the following in mind before using the Budwig Diet:
High consumption of flaxseed can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as excessive gas and diarrhea.
The diet may not be suitable for people with some types of cancer.
People with dairy intolerance will not be able to eat cottage cheese.
Eating large amounts of flaxseed may increase the risk of developing intestinal obstruction. Drinking plenty of water can reduce this risk.
Flaxseed may interact with some pain medications and medications for bleeding disorders, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
Flaxseed may make bleeding worse.
Additional sun exposure can lead to skin damage and a higher risk of developing skin cancer. A person should ask their doctor how much time they should spend in the sun and what precautions they should take.
