Our highly qualified surgeons specialize in operations of any complexity, have extensive experience and master the most modern techniques for removing tumors, such as lipoma.
Varieties of wen
In medicine, a wen is called a lipoma. This benign formation, which consists of fat cells, affects the surface of the skin. Externally, lipomas are dense tubercles of a yellowish or white hue. Single specimens do not cause concern to humans (except for the aesthetic side). If there are a lot of them on the face, they can cause pain.
Wen can form on the neck, around the eyes, on the chin, near the lips, on the nose, on the ear.
There are many types of lipomas. However, the main ones, most often found on the face, are xanthelasma and milia (millet).
Xanthelasmas are soft, yellowish formations. Their basis is sebum. They can have different sizes and arbitrary shapes. Mostly they pop out on the eyelids. They are mainly concerned about women over 50 years of age. Capable of growing, connecting with neighboring formations.
Milia are small white nodules that protrude above the epidermis. They are formed from horny particles and subcutaneous fat. Can be observed in both adults and infants. In most cases, the skin on the cheeks, chin, and wings of the nose is affected. There are both single and multiple rashes.
They do not cause discomfort and are classified as a cosmetic defect.
Reasons for the appearance of milia
The appearance of milia can be caused by hereditary factors, unhealthy diet, lack of vitamins and microelements in the human body, and metabolic disorders. These formations often appear in people with nicotine and alcohol addiction, as well as in those who abuse fatty, spicy and salty foods.

Causes of lipomas
The true causes of rashes are not fully understood. They are formed in males and females of different ages.
However, there is an assumption that wen is formed due to the impact on fat metabolism of factors such as:
- High levels of cholesterol in the blood or lipid metabolism problems. Excess cholesterol makes subcutaneous fat more viscous, which leads to blockage of the sebaceous ducts and accumulation of fat in the epidermis.
- Genetic predisposition. In the human body, from birth, uncharacteristic fat cells are formed, which contribute to the further appearance of lipomas. Transmission of the corresponding gene occurs according to the autosomal dominant type.
- Disruptions in the endocrine system. Hormonal imbalances contribute to the accumulation of subcutaneous fat in different parts of the body.
- Kidney and liver diseases. These organs are responsible for hematopoiesis, removal of toxins and excess water. Failures in their activity can lead to the formation of lipomas.
- Aggressive exposure to ultraviolet rays for a long time.
- Menopause, diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases.
- Neglect of personal hygiene rules.
- Bad habits (drinking alcohol, fatty and sweet foods).
People with combination and oily skin types are at risk.
In 50% of cases, a sharp increase in lipomas on the face signals a weakened immune system and the presence of chronic illnesses. Improper facial care, in addition to lipomas, can provoke the formation of acne. This factor accounts for 25% of cases.
Why do lipomas appear on the face?
This benign tumor is popularly called a wen. However, this name has taken root so much that you can often hear it from the doctors themselves. This does not change the essence - this neoplasm does not pose any danger to a person, but at the same time it can seriously spoil his appearance. Unfortunately, contrary to popular belief, it is impossible to fight lipomas with medication, so in any case you will have to go to specialized clinics to remove this defect. So it is better not to waste time on various “folk” methods of getting rid of this disease and immediately come to specialists, get professional advice and seriously begin to solve this purely cosmetic problem.
Lipoma on the face, as a rule, occurs in people over 30 years of age and is a benign formation (contrary to popular belief, they are not harbingers of a cancerous tumor) from an accumulation of fat cells. It grows slowly, asymptomatically and painlessly (in rare cases, when the tumor grows, it can begin to cause noticeable pain, for example, by squeezing a nerve), and is largely only a cosmetic defect.
It is impossible to accurately determine the causes of the appearance of wen. Their systemic appearance indicates a genetically inherited disease, hypomatosis. The most common version of the occurrence of wen associates their appearance with a disruption of the metabolic processes occurring in the adipose tissue of the face. Some experts believe that this may be the result of diseases of the liver, pituitary gland, thyroid and pancreas. The wen can be located on any part of the body: on the back, legs, shoulders, hips. The tumor is localized in the upper layers of the skin; very rarely it can appear in internal organs that have a fatty layer. Defects on the face are usually more noticeable and therefore most often require treatment.
Wen presents problems only from an aesthetic point of view. Most often it is localized in the upper part of the face - on the forehead or eyelids, and is a soft rolling painless tubercle. In its external manifestation, this disease is similar to another skin disease - atheroma, which occurs as a result of blockage of the sebaceous glands, but is a fundamentally different neoplasm.
Diagnosis and examination of lipomas before surgery, in the vast majority of cases, is carried out only for large lipoma sizes. The most reliable diagnostic method is ultrasound, but it is done only in cases where the tumor has grown to a serious size in order to determine its boundaries. If there is doubt about its nature, a puncture biopsy is performed - a puncture followed by sampling of material. Then a cytological examination is performed, during which the nature of the tumor is determined. In these cases, we are talking about planning surgical removal of large wen that causes pain or various kinds of inconvenience. In all other cases, visual inspection and palpation are sufficient.
Diagnosis and treatment of lipomas
To find out the cause of the formation of wen, it is recommended to consult a specialist.
The therapist collects the necessary information, after which, together with the dermatologist and surgeon, a visual examination of the patient is carried out.
Next, the formations are palpated, and if necessary (suspicion of a malignant nature), a histological examination is prescribed, which involves taking tissue for a biopsy.
Additionally, specialists may recommend ultrasound, MRI, CT, etc. It is important to distinguish lipomas from conditions such as lymphadenitis, hygroma, atheroma, etc. Only after this the doctor determines the tactics for further action.
Treatment methods for lipomas are varied:
- Medication. It involves the use of creams and ointments that help soften the tissues of the epidermis, as well as improve blood circulation. The advantage of this option is that when using local drugs, the likelihood of side effects is minimal. However, it is worth keeping in mind that the result will only be for small-sized wen (no more than 3 cm).
- Surgical intervention. Microsurgery can be performed using either local or general anesthesia. It depends on the location of lipomas. This technique is used in the case of tumors whose size exceeds 3 cm. It is important that after the operation, relapse in this area is excluded.
- Laser. Before the laser procedure, a tissue biopsy must be performed. The removal process is quick. After it there are almost no scars left. In addition, re-growth of wen is excluded.
- Electrocoagulation. Performed under local anesthesia. No regrowth is observed after this procedure.
- Puncture-aspiration method. This option is suitable for combating incompletely formed lipomas, when it is possible to suck out the fat with a needle without damaging the skin. It is painless, but has a significant drawback: there is a high probability of new lipomas forming in place of the removed ones. In addition, the devastated area of skin sags, which does not look very aesthetically pleasing.
- Chemical peeling. The ducts are deeply cleansed of sebaceous plugs. Relapses are excluded.
Other home treatments
If the tumor is small in size, you can get rid of it at home. To do this, consider several methods:
- Drying. It is necessary to wipe the acne 2-3 times a day with alcohol-containing tinctures, for example: calendula, salicylic alcohol, boric acid.
- Piercing and removal. Wipe the area of skin where the acne is located with alcohol tincture and pierce it with a needle. Then squeeze out and burn with an alcohol solution.
- Cauterization. For this you need an iodine solution. Cauterize pointwise 2 times a day.
You should also not forget about mask treatment methods, for example: a mask made from aloe, golden mustache, onions, red pepper.
- Cut off an aloe leaf, then apply it to the tumor, attaching it with a medical plaster. It is advisable to do this at night. We repeat the procedure as necessary.
- Grind the leaves of the golden mustache and apply it to the problem area for 2 hours.
- Onion-based mask: chop the onion and apply to the affected area. It is necessary to repeat several times until complete cure.
- Mask based on red pepper: place ground red pepper on gauze soaked in alcohol and apply to the problem area for 15 minutes. The duration of this procedure is about three weeks, twice a day.
Prevention
You can reduce the risk of developing wen if you adhere to certain points:
- giving up bad habits;
- maintaining a healthy diet;
- regular hygiene;
- use of exclusively high-quality cosmetics;
- periodic examinations by a dermatologist.
If the precautions still prove to be insufficient and wen forms, you need to seek professional help from a specialist. You cannot pierce or squeeze out lipomas yourself, as this can lead to blood poisoning (due to infection), scars, etc. Only a doctor can determine the nature of the tumor and, if necessary, prescribe treatment.
How to treat a wen in a child
Small wen may appear in children under one year of age on the nose or eyelids. The reason for their appearance is the immaturity of the child’s hormonal system. These types of wen go away on their own over time. Internal acne that appears on the gums does not require treatment. They will go away on their own as soon as the baby starts teething.
If a tumor is discovered in the ear, then you cannot postpone a visit to the doctor.
If the child is still small, the formations have appeared recently and are small in size, the doctor will prescribe conservative treatment. It consists of following a diet based on foods containing fiber and vitamins, as well as using ointments, the function of which is to treat the excretory ducts of the sebaceous glands. Traditional methods can be used, for example, onions with soap or aloe.
If in the case of wen on the face there are recipes on how to get rid of them at home, then if a tumor appears on the back of the head, neck, or chest, it is dangerous to waste time. It can only be eliminated surgically in order to avoid the consequences associated with the harmful effects of lipoma on blood vessels.
Lipoma at first glance seems like a harmless disease, but complications can arise if the formation increases or becomes inflamed. Then you need to act immediately.
