Alcohol negatively affects all organs and systems. This has been proven by many tests. The situation is more dangerous if there are diseases of the digestive system. Patients may experience vomiting of blood after drinking alcohol. This is a manifestation of dangerous processes in the body, so urgent treatment will be required.
Features and accompanying manifestations
Vomiting after drinking alcohol indicates that the person has been poisoned. But, if blood admixtures are observed, this symptom indicates that the vessels have ruptured and hemorrhage has occurred inside the body. Therefore, an urgent examination is necessary to determine the severity of the pathological process.
With small blood losses in the body, up to 200 ml, there may be no associated manifestations. Although the patient may have this condition accompanied by:
- mild nausea;
- dry mouth;
- chills;
- loss of strength.
If the bleeding is severe, the condition worsens and, in addition to general malaise, the person begins to have noise in the ears, the heart beats rapidly, dizziness, and blood pressure readings are significantly higher than normal.
In this condition, sweating increases and the skin turns pale. Strong thirst leads to a hoarse voice. If the stomach or intestines are damaged, the patient may experience black, loose stools.
This is a dangerous condition that requires medical attention. Only a medical institution can take measures to prevent shock and death of the patient.
Before bleeding, the victim often feels severe pain, but gradually its intensity decreases. If the level of blood pressure in the artery increases significantly, the patient loses consciousness.
Symptomatic therapy
The appearance of blood in the contents of the stomach indicates serious diseases of the digestive system or other organs, so self-medication or delay in seeking medical help can be harmful to health. Patients with coffee-ground vomiting require rest and urgent hospitalization to determine the causes of the symptom and select a treatment regimen. At the preclinical stage, applying cold to the abdomen is acceptable. Intensive therapy is aimed at stopping bleeding and normalizing hemodynamic parameters.
Main reasons: why vomits blood after drinking alcohol
Vomits blood after drinking alcohol for various reasons. This condition is typical for damage to the stomach and esophagus. The development of a pathological condition is associated with the influence of many factors, which can only be determined by qualified diagnostics of the body. Drinking alcohol often results in the following consequences:
- Mallory-Weiss syndrome. According to ICD-10, this condition is classified as gastroesophageal rupture hemorrhagic syndrome. In this case, the mucous membrane is covered with linear breaks. This is a consequence of recurrent vomiting, which can occur with alcohol abuse. Gradually, the surface of the mucous membrane becomes covered with small lesions, which, under the influence of frequent vomiting, enlarge and form tears. Treatment consists of using conservative methods. Severe cases require surgery.
- Internal varicose veins. If you vomit blood after drinking alcohol, and the clots have a scarlet tint, this may be a sign of dilation of blood vessels in the gastric mucosa. Constant blood pressure provokes thinning of the walls of blood vessels, they cannot withstand and rupture. It is much more dangerous if the blood clots become dark in color. This phenomenon indicates prolonged and intense bleeding and requires immediate medical attention.
- Stomach ulcers. Under the influence of ethyl alcohol, the acidity of gastric juice increases, which is accompanied by destruction of the walls of the stomach. This is manifested by painful sensations in the upper abdominal cavity after eating. Gradually, the pathology leads to loss of appetite, constant heartburn and nausea, and a feeling of heaviness in the stomach. Gradually, ethanol provokes profound changes in the glandular apparatus of the digestive system. First, there is an increased production of mucus, with hydrochloric acid, pepsin and various enzymes. This causes exacerbation and new lesions of the mucous membrane. The patient's large vessels are destroyed, which can cause blood loss. Often in this condition, perforation of the ulcer occurs, in which the contents of the stomach penetrate into the abdominal cavity and an inflammatory process occurs.
- Cirrhosis. After drinking alcohol, people suffering from liver diseases, namely cirrhosis . If a person has been diagnosed with this disease, he must permanently abstain from any drinks containing alcohol. The disease is characterized by dilation of the vessels of the esophagus. Under the influence of blood pressure, they can rupture and cause severe bleeding. With cirrhosis, constant monitoring of the body's condition is necessary. Only this can save you from developing severe complications.
There are other factors under the influence of which a person vomits blood after drinking alcohol. This problem may be encountered by those who have inflammation, cancer or chronic diseases.
Diagnostic methods
It is important for the doctor to understand the causes and source of bleeding, and choose the right treatment tactics. Often you have to act very quickly. First of all, you need to find out what diseases the patient suffers from and whether he has taken any medications recently. Then an examination is carried out, which may include:
- Chest X-ray.
- General and biochemical blood tests (to diagnose anemia and assess liver parameters).
- Stool test for occult blood.
- Plain radiography of the abdominal cavity.
- Contrast-enhanced radiography.
- Endoscopic examination - FGDS.
How to help
If a person finds himself in such a situation, he needs the help of others. In such a situation, you must perform the following actions:
- Put the patient to bed. It should be positioned on its side. This way, vomit will not accumulate in the respiratory tract and an attack of suffocation can be avoided.
- Cover with a blanket and open the windows to allow oxygen into the room.
- Warm the patient. This will lead to improved blood circulation.
- To prevent blood stagnation, the person should be turned over periodically. The patient should not be left unattended. If his condition worsens, he may choke on vomit.
- Place a basin near the bed, as vomiting may continue for some time.
- Ensure normal drinking regime. A person should drink more clean water. Sorbents will also help. It is enough to give the patient activated carbon to drink to speed up the cleansing of the body.
- Measure pulse and blood pressure, if available.
You should not feed the victim, because eating will only complicate the functioning of the digestive system and worsen the condition. That's all you need to do in this condition.
Thanks to proper first aid, you can alleviate the condition of the victim and prevent the development of complications. It is important to get the patient to the hospital as quickly as possible. Especially if high fever joins the general symptoms.
First aid
If after drinking alcohol a person vomits blood, emergency assistance must be provided. A particularly alarming symptom is if the patient loses strength, is in a pre-fainting state, and the skin suddenly turns pale. This indicates severe bleeding that is life-threatening. If left untreated, it can cause death.
First aid is provided to those who are nearby. If a person is conscious, he must carry out the activities himself. It is necessary to take a horizontal position. To improve blood circulation, you can cover yourself warmly. It is forbidden to leave the patient alone. With severe weakness during the gag reflex, he may choke. Therefore, it is recommended to place the patient on his side.
To relieve poisoning, it is recommended to give an adsorbent, for example, activated carbon. Drinking plenty of fluids will also help. But it must be clean water, without gas and flavoring additives. You can use Regidron to normalize the water-salt balance. It is important that mineral waters should not be used if you have a stomach ulcer. Eating is prohibited until the exact cause of the bleeding is determined.
In severe cases, doctors use radical methods to quickly stop bleeding. After the diagnosis, the severity of the bleeding is determined, then the doctor prescribes one of the procedures:
- Balloon tamponade using a probe.
- Gastric lavage to remove blood clots and alcohol residues.
- Minor operations, for example, ligation, sclerotherapy, performed endoscopically.
- Drug therapy aimed at inhibiting bleeding and accelerating regeneration.
In severe cases, open surgery . It includes vein suturing, bypass surgery, and transsection of the esophagus.
Great importance is given to drug therapy . Numerous reviews prove that treatment at the first signs of bleeding allows you to solve the problem without surgery and prevent the development of life-threatening complications.
Drug therapy is carried out as part of first aid. It is performed both at home and in a hospital setting. it is not recommended to do anything before the doctor arrives . Doctors often use the following drugs:
- Solutions for restoring water-salt balance. They will help prevent dehydration. This could be Gastrolit or Regidron.
- To accelerate the removal of decomposition products, adsorbents are needed. This will help reduce alcohol intoxication and alleviate the patient’s condition. Polysorb, Smecta, Activated carbon are used.
- The greatest load falls on the liver, so drugs are chosen that are aimed at maintaining the organ. They should not only help her cleanse the blood of toxins, but also restore damaged cells. For this purpose, Karsil, Heptor and others are appointed.
- Long-term consumption of alcoholic beverages leads to intestinal dysfunction. The microflora is especially affected, so the course of medications should include probiotics. To eliminate heaviness and nausea, you can take Cerucal and Motilium.
- The appearance of bile in the vomit may indicate the development of complications from the gallbladder. To eliminate this symptom, Hofitol is prescribed.
It is important to alleviate the general condition of the patient. Nootropics are used to normalize the functioning of the nervous system and brain . This could be Piracetam, Phenibut and others.
As a supplement, you can also use folk recipes. They are used only with the permission of a doctor and under his supervision. Before trying this or that recipe, it is important to exclude individual intolerance to the components and other contraindications.
When vomiting with blood, you can use the following recipes :
- A whole quince fruit is crushed and filled with a glass of water. The mixture must be boiled. This compote will help eliminate nausea and vomiting. To do this, you need to take one spoonful of the drink every half hour.
- Dried orange or lemon peels. They should be crushed and poured with a glass of vodka. It is recommended to prepare this remedy in advance and keep it at home. To eliminate nausea and vomiting, take 25 drops in a glass of water.
- Chickweed herb is also great for treating bleeding symptoms. You can make juice from fresh herbs or brew dried ones. Take a spoonful until the condition eases.
- Chicken bone broth. It must be cooked without salt and spices. Only cranberries are allowed to be added. Take several times a day as food.
How to treat a person if he vomits blood after drinking alcohol
After the victim is admitted to a medical facility, you first need to find out why he is vomiting blood after drinking alcohol. For this purpose, diagnostic studies of internal organs are carried out. is mandatory , during which a probe with a camera at the end is placed in the oral cavity and advanced through the esophagus into the stomach, checking the condition of the mucous membranes as it moves. Blood and urine are also checked. After receiving the results, a diagnosis will be made and treatment will be prescribed.
If you seek help in time, you can get by with medications. In severe cases, surgery or endoscopic techniques may be required. Since this condition can occur for various reasons, complex therapy is required.
First, to remove blood clots, the stomach is washed with cold water. Its temperature should not be higher than +4 degrees. Using a probe, the intensity of the bleeding is monitored. After this, medications . To narrow the blood vessels, they resort to blockade with adrenaline. Treatment includes medications such as vasodilators and vasoconstrictors, as well as balloon tamponade with two types of probes.
Severe vomiting after heavy drinking - what to do
It’s good if the drinker’s relatives know how to stop vomiting after an alcoholic binge. But they cannot always cope with intoxication on their own. If the above listed dangerous symptoms occur, attempting treatment at home is strictly prohibited. Only an experienced narcologist who has a whole arsenal of modern antiemetic drugs will help here.
If the patient feels tolerant and does not vomit very often, he can be helped as follows:
- Give a weak solution of potassium permanganate to drink. It should have a light pink color (in no case saturated, as it can burn the mucous membranes).
- Cleanse the intestines with an enema.
- Give an absorbent tablet (for example, activated carbon).
It is also important to give the patient plenty of fluids to drink. In case of intoxication, still mineral water or herbal decoctions are suitable.
Rehabilitation period
After therapeutic measures, the condition improves within a few days. In the future, the patient is contraindicated from drinking alcoholic beverages. If you continue to drink alcohol, the condition will worsen and emergency measures will be required.
A special diet plays an important role in recovery. It is aimed at reducing the load and accelerating the recovery of the gastric mucosa.
Doctors recommend giving up fried, spicy and salty, smoked and canned foods for several weeks. A low-smoking diet is recommended for any stomach disease. It allows you to relieve the digestive system and avoid deterioration in health . In the acute period, it is better to completely refuse food and drink a lot of clean water without gas. After a day, a small amount of broth or slimy porridge is allowed.
Gradually, the frequency of meals can be increased. At the beginning of treatment, you cannot eat anything other than liquid and warm food, which has a gentle effect on the digestive system.
The patient's diet should consist of mucous soups, porridges with water, and jelly. Over time, it can be varied with soft-boiled eggs and meat soufflé. The diet must be prescribed by the attending physician. At the same time, it takes into account the state of the body. In addition to proper nutrition, vitamin and mineral complexes may be recommended to speed up recovery.
Diet
You will have to not only forget about alcohol, but also completely reconsider your diet. At first, it is better for the patient not to eat. The most important thing now is to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. It is useful to drink teas based on calendula, rosehip or chamomile. They have a calming effect, relieve inflammation and help you recover faster from illness.
Usually, significant relief occurs within 2-3 days. This is only if the patient observed bed rest and followed all the doctors’ orders. Properly selected food will help replenish the supply of nutrients and will not irritate the esophagus and stomach. During this period, it is important not to overload the liver and pancreas. All fried and fatty foods are completely excluded. You should also not eat marinades, preserves, raw vegetables and fruits, as well as red meat. Food should be soft, pureed, and at a comfortable temperature.
It is best to start with weak tea and jelly, gradually moving on to liquid porridge and diluted chicken broth. Next, move on to chopped chicken pulp and soft-boiled eggs. It is recommended to drink vitamin C to strengthen the body. After complete recovery, you will need to strictly follow a diet and regularly visit a gastroenterologist. A specialist will help you choose the right diet for the future.
What are the consequences of lack of treatment?
Vomiting blood after alcohol is most often caused by disorders in the digestive system. If you ignore the symptoms and do not visit a medical facility, this may result in suffocation due to large amounts of vomit entering the respiratory tract. Also, blood loss will first cause anemia, followed by shock and death.
After discharge, the patient must follow a diet, avoid alcoholic beverages, and undergo examinations by a gastroenterologist at least once a year. This will prevent relapse and allow timely detection of the development of complications or other pathological conditions.
Signs indicating severe intoxication
Symptoms of alcohol poisoning and vomiting appear a few hours after drinking or the next day. Narcologists often observe a reflex eruption of stomach contents with inclusions of blood. Bloody impurities indicate severe irritation of the gastrointestinal mucous membranes with alcohol or internal bleeding. Both reasons are very dangerous.
Ailments that occur the morning after drinking demonstrate an increase in the concentration of toxic acetaldehyde in the blood. The level of this component increases gradually. The more a person drinks, the worse his health will be.
There is no need to think that poisoning after drinking alcohol is safe. This is wrong. Of course, if a person does not have alcohol addiction and chronic diseases, he will most likely be able to recover on his own. However, no one can give such a guarantee. Refusal to receive medical advice is always bringing oneself closer to serious violations.
It is especially important to consult with a narcologist if, after drinking, you experience:
- nausea, vomiting;
- unproductive vomiting, due to which a large amount of saliva is released, it is not possible to drink even ordinary water;
- severe headaches;
- constant thirst;
- feeling of “goosebumps” running over the skin, numbness of the limbs;
- difficulties with orientation in space;
- a sharp increase or, conversely, decrease in blood pressure;
- gradual decline of basic neurological reflexes.
If vomiting that develops due to alcohol poisoning is very severe, a life-threatening disruption of the heart rhythm may occur. The person also runs the risk of falling into a coma and dying.

What type of cancer can cause bleeding?
The most common type of gastric carcinoma is infiltration with ulceration or ulcerative-infiltrative type; the size of the lesion and ulcerative defect can be any size, up to total damage to the organ. A cancer ulcer has rough, protruding and uneven boundaries; its walls and bottom form a kind of folded funnel. Saucer-shaped carcinoma is distinguished when the ulcer has very clear and uniform boundaries.
In addition, cancerous infiltration can pass through the gastric wall and penetrate into the pancreas and pull the abdominal omental bursa into the conglomerate. Even with tiny early cancer with a minimal ulcerative defect, organ-preserving surgery - mucosal resection - is excluded, because the true boundaries of the tumor are in the deep layers of the gastric wall.
The ulcerative form of cancer in appearance is almost no different from a banal chronic gastric ulcer, and that is why during each gastroscopy, a biopsy is taken from the edges of the mucosal defect from all absolutely ulcer patients.
It is almost impossible for carcinoma growing outside the stomach to bypass the vessel, because in the thickness of the wall the arterial vessels form four interconnected vascular networks: inside and under the mucous layer, between the muscular and under the serous layers. That is why bleeding is the most common complication of the disease.
