Use of the drug Tabex

The drug is administered orally according to the following regimen: for the first three days, 6 times a day (every 2 hours), 1 tablet, while simultaneously reducing the number of cigarettes smoked. If the result is unsatisfactory, treatment is stopped and can be resumed after 2–3 months. If the effect is positive, treatment is continued according to the following scheme:

• from the 4th to the 12th day - 1 tablet every 2.5 hours (5 tablets per day);
• from the 13th to the 16th day - 1 tablet every 3 hours (4 tablets per day);
• from the 17th to the 20th day - 1 tablet every 5 hours (3 tablets per day);
• from the 21st to the 25th day - 1-2 tablets per day.

Complete cessation of smoking should occur by the 5th day from the start of treatment. After completing treatment, the patient should show willpower and not allow himself to smoke.

Description and action

Tabex belongs to the group of drugs for the treatment of nicotine addiction. (Bulgaria). The price of the drug is 1020 rubles/100 tablets. The main active ingredient in the composition is cytisine, an alkaloid obtained from the seeds of the Russian broom plant. The tablets are biconvex, covered with a brown film, white inside. In addition to 1.5 mg of cytisine, each pill contains:

• lactose;
• talc;
• magnesium stearate;
• cellulose;
• dyes;
• macrogoal

Cytisine has a number of effects on the autonomic nervous system. After ingestion and absorption, this alkaloid excites the nerve ganglia, enhances breathing, and leads to the production of adrenaline by the adrenal glands. The drug also causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The mechanism of action is similar to that of nicotine, so cytisine begins to competitively suppress the effect of nicotine on specific receptors. This leads to a decrease in the need for smoking and a gradual decrease in nicotine addiction. Compared to nicotine, cytisine has much less toxicity.

The use of the drug and simultaneous smoking can lead to increased side effects of nicotine (nicotine intoxication). Tabex should be prescribed only when the patient has a serious intention to quit smoking. There is not enough clinical experience with the use of Tabex in patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure, hypertension (arterial hypertension), cerebrovascular diseases, obliterating arterial diseases, hyperthyroidism, peptic ulcers, diabetes mellitus, renal or liver failure. The drug has a number of important contraindications, including age - it is forbidden to drink it before the age of 18 and over 65 years.

Tabex should not be taken if you are intolerant to any component or have an allergic reaction to any of the constituent substances. It is prohibited in severe forms of heart disease - a previous heart attack, advanced angina or its unstable type, and arrhythmias. Tabex is prohibited for the following pathologies:

• hypertension;

• atherosclerosis;
• lactase deficiency in the body;
• galactosemia.

The medicine is strictly prohibited during pregnancy and lactation. According to the instructions, the tablets should be taken whole with a sufficient amount of water. It is impossible to exceed the norms recommended by the annotation. The recommendations are as follows:

If the doses described in the regimen are not followed, there is a risk of overdose. Typically, negative effects occur when the dose is increased several times the therapeutic dose. It is also undesirable to use the medicine during treatment with statins (drugs for high cholesterol). Such therapy often causes severe muscle pain - myalgia. Tabex reduces the effectiveness of taking antihypertensive drugs, which should be taken into account in the presence of high blood pressure.
